  6. The G.A.S. Connection is pleased to announce a new system available to all
  7. anesthesia providers. This system puts a large amount of information and
  8. an equally large number of services as close to you as your microcomputer and
  9. modem.  An expanding library of data has been collected which we feel you will
  10. find useful in your anesthesia practice.  This data and unique service may be
  11. accessed anytime from your own home or office. The system has been designed
  12. exclusively for anesthesia professionals by anesthesia professionals.
  13.  
  14. Many of the features of this system resemble a computer bulletin board (BBS)
  15. system. We provide for the exchange of messages and public domain computer
  16. programs. We have a large library of PCDOS/MSDOS and CPM public domain
  17. programs. In addition we are building library's of public domain programs for
  18. Apple II, Commodore 64, Macintosh, and Amiga microcomputers. We plan to
  19. constantly update all of these libraries . We are always especially mindful of
  20. any public domain software that might be of special interest to anesthesia
  21. providers. This feature alone could make the system an invaluable tool.

  23. As interesting as these services are, they are not the features that make our
  24. system truly one of a kind. Unlike the typical computer bulletin board system
  25. we maintain information services online that are specific to the specialty of
  26. Anesthesiology.
  27.  
  28. We provide a mechanism to find the titles of articles related to professional
  29. anesthesia publications and commercial microcomputer publications. This is
  30. accomplished by maintaining two online data base programs you may access.
  31. You locate titles by entering a keyword. The program returns all articles
  32. which have been indexed to that specific keyword.
  33.  
  34. The anesthesia journals currently supported are Anesthesiology, Anesthesia &
  35. Analgesia, Anesthesiology Review, and The Journal of the American Association
  36. of Nurse Anesthetists. Also supported are many of the popular microcomputer
  37. publications. If there are other publications you would like to see indexed let
  38. us know, if there is sufficient interest thay will be added to our list. We
  39. will began indexing these Journals 1 Jan 1987. All articles published after
  40. that date will be indexed and maintained.

  42. An online list of all United States senators and representatives is provided .
  43. Making a simple selection from a menu will list the name, Washington address
  44. and phone number of those members of congress that represent you and your home
  45. state.
  46.  
  47. There is a section that provides you with a list of attorney's who have
  48. indicated that their area of expertise is medical defense or matters related
  49. to antitrust action. We will rely on you to help us add addtional law firms
  50. to this list. Another section has information related to business and taxes.
  51.  
  52. Many bulletin board systems limit the time you may spend on the system. On the
  53. anesthesia information system you may stay on the system as long as you like.
  54. Other commercial information systems charge you a fee for accessing most of
  55. their online information retrieval areas plus a fee for connect time. On our
  56. system you only pay applicable toll charges to the telephone company.

  58. There are sections with information related to travel, DRG's, medical
  59. manufacturers, federal grants to health care, economics computers, commercial
  60. anesthesia software, commercial medical software and many, many other topics.
  61.  
  62. In addition, there are many lists of toll free numbers related to travel, car
  63. rental, airlines, cruises, computers, etc. One of our principal goals  is to
  64. provide you with pertinent information. Sometimes just getting the right
  65. phone number gets you pointed in the right direction so a list of phone numbers
  66. specifically directed at anesthesia providers and is maintained which contains
  67. the addresses and phone numbers for : ASA, AANA, AMA, ACOG, FTC, ACS, AORN,
  68. ANA, and many other professional organizations.
  69.  
  70. There is also a section devoted to the placement of anesthesia providers in
  71. jobs. We will list job openings and the names of anesthesia providers looking
  72. for a practice setting. A very unique feature in this section is yet another
  73. data base that you may access. This data base contains the name and address of
  74. over 7,000 hospitals and clinics in the United States. You can list all of the
  75. hospitals for any city in the United States (providing of course they have a
  76. hospital). Your access to this particular feature is limited to five times per
  77. year.

  79. Early in 1987 we will implement a proprietary system of electronic mail which
  80. will enable you  to send a file to any other user of this system. You send it
  81. to us, tell us who is to receive it, and we tag it for you. When the person to
  82. whom you have sent the file logs on to our system thay are informed that they
  83. have mail waiting and at that point it can be downloaded.

  85. There are sections in the system that highlight anesthesia meetings and
  86. seminars. We are currently completing a mechanism that will allow you to
  87. register online for certain anesthesia meetings.
  88.  
  89. We want to participate with you in making this system a contemporary forum
  90. that can address any aspect of anesthesia practice. So once you are on board
  91. we invite your ideas and comments.

  93. The fee for all of the services discussed thus far described is $125.00
  94. annually. We will be putting the system online on New Years Day 1987. Unlike
  95. other systems, there is no additional charge incurred for connect time. All
  96. you pay is the telephone toll charge.
  97.  
  98. If you register prior to New Years day you will save $25.00. This substantial
  99. savings is offered to encourage early registration. As soon as you register,
  100. you will be sent a peronal  access code, password, and users guide. Remeber,
  101. register before January 1, 1987 and the cost is only  $100.00. Your membership
  102. fees will not be due again until the following New Years Day, January 1, 1988.
  103. Early registration will allow us to get the necessary material to you and add
  104. your name to our computers data base.

  106. To use this system you need a microcomputer, a modem capable of 300 or 1200
  107. baud, a monitor that can display 80 columns (or software that will allow your
  108. monitor to display 80 columns) and communication software for your computer
  109. that supports the xmodem or ymodem telecommunications protocol. If you only
  110. plan on sending and receiving text files a communication software package that
  111. only supports ASCII transfer is sufficient. We would encourage you to purchase
  112. software that supports the xmodem or ymodem protocol.

  114. The communication software for your computer is available at your local
  115. computer store. Many communities have a "Computer Users Group" that supports
  116. many microcomputers. If your community has one for your micro you can obtain a
  117. public domain communication program for your machine at no cost or for a very
  118. nominal fee.

  120. Our users manual and the help screens on our system will make using it very
  121. easy. We have no control regarding the ease of use of your communication
  122. software. Be sure to buy it from a dealer who will help you become familiar
  123. with it or from an active user group.
  124.  
  125. There will be some services offered in the future that will require an
  126. additional fee. For instance we can supply you with labels addressed to
  127. hospitals located in a geographic area larger than a city. These services will
  128. be announced on the system.

  130. One of the services we will be offering early in 1987 is a continuing education
  131. program that will permit you to earn CE credit. We have been developing this
  132. important aspect in co-operation with  the Institute for Post Graduate
  133. Education (IPGE) of Hastings, Michigan. Users of this system will have access
  134. to specially designed continuing education programs using your computer and
  135. modem. Each of these educational programs will address a specific topic related
  136. to current anesthesia practice and will permit you the flexibility of earning
  137. CE credit in your own home at a very nominal cost. We are very excited about
  138. this aspect of the anesthesia information system.

  140. This announcement (of necessity) is somewhat brief. We are sure that it will
  141. whet your appetite. We invite you to register, become an active user and help
  142. us develop this system into a dynamic resource for all anesthesia
  143. practitioners.

  145. It is required that you register by mail. As soon as we  receive your
  146. application and fees we will send you your personal access number and password
  147. You will also receive directions for using the system. Please fill out each
  148. space on the application form. Your phone numbers are optional, but we do need
  149. your social security and professional membership numbers. A portion of your
  150. social security number will become your password. If you decide to avail
  151. yourself of our continuing education programs we will need your professional
  152. recertification number to speed credit recording.
